Welcome to Dr. O's Guide to "Always Be": A Sassy Series for Educators

Episode Three: Always Be Pausing and Taking a Deep Breath

SuperTeachers, it's time to channel your inner zen master with our next mantra: Always Be Pausing and Taking a Deep Breath. This isn’t just about catching your breath—it’s strategic classroom management. Before you jump into action over student behavior, take a moment to Pause before you charge.

This technique is a sidekick to Always Be Collecting Data and is crucial for maintaining both rapport and respect in your classroom.

Here’s the play: even if students seem off task, don’t just dive in with corrections. Instead, take a strategic pause to assess and then redirect their behavior. This approach helps keep the focus on learning, not on the disruption.

Here’s how you do it: Take a deep breath—inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth. During that breath, assume the best. Imagine that every student is on-task and engaged.

With this asset-based mindset, decide your response, not your reaction. Opt for the least disruptive yet most effective strategy. A little eye contact here, a quiet stroll by their desk there, or maybe a sticky note that says, “Stay on task, SuperStar.”

So, SuperTeachers, remember to breathe in calm and breathe out strategy. Your classroom atmosphere—and your blood pressure—will thank you for it.

Looking forward to your thoughts in the comments below—like, share, and keep breathing!
